Article: How to Know If Your Child Has Autism

>> Monday, May 21, 2012

Article Source:
http://www.ppa.org.ph/how-to-know-if-your-child-has-autism.html (from Philippine Psychiatric Association website)

autismAre you boggled by the weird habits your child make? Do you think that he could be affected by autism? Fret not, because it can be a false alarm. As a parent, it’s understandable that you will worry about your child’s unusual behavior. However, never assume anything unless you have a confirmed that your child is autistic. You may have your kid checked by the doctor, or, if you’re not ready to have that kind of appointment, might as well observe some of the traits that a child with autism might have. Here are most of the questions you that can be confusing your right now:

My baby coos and babbles, but seldom does that happen, could this be a sign? If an infant or toddler does not coo or babble by 12 months, then it’s possibility. Usually, a baby below 12 months may have autism if he/she does not gesture like pointing fingers, waving, grasping things and so on.

My child is not yet talking and he’s almost 2 years old now, what do I do? A child with autism does not say a single word by 16 months of his/her age. However, do not panic because there had been cases that it took two years or even more for a child to learn how to speak. Sometimes, the lack of nutrients is what causes this problem so make sure that you feed your child with the right milk and baby food he/she needs.

Could my child be autistic if he doesn’t usually respond to his name? An autistic child often doesn’t respond to his/her name but seeing this single trait should not make your come up with a conclusion that he’s autistic.

Here are also some of the traits or behavior that can be a sign of autism. Just have in mind that you have to observe and find multiple signs before bringing him/her to the doctor:

- Has mannerism or odd body movement or patterns.
- Is intensely violent when having tantrums.
- The child might be uncooperative or hyperactive.
- Has a slow learning pattern when it comes to playing toys.
- Doesn’t smile back when somebody smiles at him/her.
- Has poor eye contact when talked to.
- Would prefer to play alone rather than to interact with other kids.
- Has a trait of independence despite his/her young age.
- Does things earlier than other kids do.
- Has his/her “own world”.
- Not socially interested with other kids.
- Has weird attachments to various things like his/her toys, schedules or even objects. If your kids got a “perfect score” for this test, then you might have to bring him/her to the doctor and have the traits evaluated. Having a child with autism should not be grieved at because modern technology and therapy can make your child grow up to be normal.

News clip: More Pinoys Want to be Licensed Professionals

>> Sunday, April 22, 2012

By Mayen Jaymalin (The Philippine Star) Updated April 16, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - More and more Filipinos would like to be licensed professionals, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said yesterday.

PRC reported a continued growth in the number of licensure examinees for different professions.

“The number of professional boards under our jurisdiction is growing that is why the number of examinees have also increased. In a year, we receive about 300,000 applications for licensure examination,” PRC commissioner Jennifer Manalili said in Filipino.

From 20 boards, Manalili said that there are now 46 boards under the supervision of the PRC, with Real Estate as the newest addition.

“There is a growing demand for real estate professionals that is why more and more are taking the exam. Soon, schools would be offering a course on Real Estate Management as well,” she disclosed.

The commissioner added, PRC has started interviewing membership nominees for the soon to be created Board of Psychology and Board of Respiratory Therapy, which are expected to be established within the year.

“More courses have expressed the intention to be licensed, in fact there are (several) pending bills for new boards,” she noted.

Based on the PRC data, the number of examinees for licensed criminologists and maritime engineers is also growing.

There are also a high demand for geological mining engineers, optometrist, and medical technologist, but only a few are taking such courses.

To accommodate the growing number of examinees, PRC has implemented an online application system, which enable faster and easier application process.
